The Houses Tour

The identity of Monroeville began to emerge in the early 1800s as a small village in the hills just to the east of Pittsburgh.  Today it is a major municipality with some 30,000 residents. Their housing reflects the social history of the community.  As older houses are lost to make way for new construction, it’s useful to pause, from time to time, and review what we have.  In 1982, we were presented with such a review when the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation did a survey of Monroeville’s significant structures. 

The current review is being conducted on the verge of the 21^st century, in 2006, and may serve as a sort of snapshot --a status report on housing in Monroeville. It covers five eras with pictures of significant houses, selected because of their historical value, because they are unique, or because they provide examples of various architectural styles common to our region. They are simply a few of  the significant houses of Monroeville.
