Alpine Village, 1959
In late 1959, the developers of Garden City (Sampson-Miller Associated Company) were working on their latest project for the eastern end of Monroeville. As the hilly terrain brought to mind an “Alpine Village,” street names were chosen consistent with the Swiss theme: Luzerne, Interlacken, Matterhorn, St. Moritz, Tyrolia, and Altaview.
While the developers might be forgiven for a bit of exaggeration in comparing the wooded hills to the splendor of the Alps, there is no doubt that Alpine Village takes advantage of Monroeville’s natural beauty -- its rugged hills and ravines. The homes are situated with attention to their scenic backdrop.
Alpine Village, like the other major developments of the 50s, became a distinct community with its civic association, baseball team, and its own pool and neighborhood park – a sense of place that established it as yet another of Monroeville’s emerging neighborhoods.
